A stock split converts existing shares into a larger number of shares. If a company announces a 1:10 split, you receive 10 new shares for every share you own, and the price falls to a tenth of what it was. There is no gain to be had from buying a share ahead of a split. Splits are typically used by companies whose share price has climbed very high.
