Dow Jones

What is the Dow Jones?

The Dow Jones — Dow Jones Industrial Average in full — is a US stock index created in 1896 to track how the large industrial companies on the American market were doing. Today it holds 30 large US companies across industries, not just industrials. They are picked by a committee and are not necessarily the country's 30 largest: the index is price-weighted, so a share with a high price counts for more than one with a high market value.
